A Study on the Interval between Marriage and First Conception and Pregnancy Wastage

Abstract
This study was made on the basis of the fertility survey results which was conducted during the period from March to May, 1965 in a middle town area of Echon Eup, Kyunggi Province. Of a total sample size of 2,024 eligible women(age 20-44) selected for the survey, only the results of 1,012 women allegedly had neither practised family planning nor experienced abstinence were utilized for this study.
Followings are brief summary of the findings on the interval between marriage and first conception and pregnancy wastage; The mean interval between marriage and first conception was 14.7 months. The proportion of women who had first conception within 3 months since marriage was 41%, within 6 months was 58% and within 1 year was 74%. It indicates that most of them had first conception in one year after the marriage.
The results on the pattern of this first pregnancy interval showed a general tendency to decrease. The average interval between marriage and first conception wich occurred about 25 years ago(from the time of survey, 1965) was found to be 17.7 months(S.D.13.2) while that of within last 5 years was 10.5 months (S.D.10.8). An exception was that the between 10 and 14 years ago showed somewhat higher which is about the time of Korean War.
As for the rate of pregnancy wastage of the first conception, the overall average rate was 37 per 1000 conceptions(20.9 for spontaneous abortion, 13.7 for still birth and 2.5 for induced abortion). This relatively low pregnancy wastage rate as compared with the study results in other countries partially considered to be due to lack of memory, unrecognizable early abortion and respondent¢¥s reluctancy in informing their experience of abortion.
